Paul Collingwood could easily have walked away from all forms of international cricket this winter, rather than just announce his Test match retirement. He has featured on three Ashes triumphs and captained England to Twenty20 World Cup success in the West Indies in 2010 - the only one-day title they have ever won.
Rightly, he will be remembered as one of the most committed team men English cricket has seen over the last couple of decades. But the manner in which he struggled with the bat on all forms of the game during the tour of Australia, scratching around like a pub team number seven, was uncomfortable to watch. It seemed international retirement would have been the best options - preferably of his own volition - but fortunately it appears he is not quite finished yet. And nobody will be more relieved than Andy Flower, the England team director.
