ICC Cricket World Cup 1992
With Waqar Younis returning home, Saeed Anwar and Ata-ur-Rehman falling unfit, and Javed Miandad coming late to Australia, Pakistan upset the odds as they lifted the trophy with victory over the England in the final. A self belief ruled out the obstacles. Among the odds, the 1992 World Cup (aka Benson & Hedges Cup), 5th edition, paved the way to many changes, introducing color uniforms instead of traditional white, white balls replaced the red one, and matches were played under flood-lights till late evening. A controversial system of recalculating team totals was also introduced for reduced number of overs for the matches affected by rains. Further, South Africa, an African Test nation, for the first time played in the World Cup and first time a Cricket World Cup was held in the Southern hemisphere. New Zealand setting confusion for the batsmen did the opening with spinner instead of fast bowlers, as the tradition ruled. The technique of pinch-hitter set the trend where the batsmen fixed higher run-rate in the first 15 overs by hitting the ball all around. And to accommodate South Africa, 9 teams in total, the teams were not divided in groups, but each team competed with all the other 8. The top four teams qualified for the semifinals, whose winners played the final.
